Sanary-Sur-Mer First Floor apartment rental in Cote D`Azur, France

This light and airy Var holiday rental apartment
is set in a small, gated development about five minutes walk from the nearest small beach, and about one kilometre from larger beaches. Set in the uncrowded Port-Issol area, where open views and pine trees abound and the sea is just down the road. Local small shops are about one kilometre, with the main port of Sanary being about two kilometres to the east - a pleasant walk, but possibly not on a very hot day.

Rather unusually for France, the apartments have their own pretty, landscaped gardens with ample sitting space. Three buildings are arranged around three sides of a square, allowing open views over the pool, gardens and beyond, and ensuring that no-one is too overlooked. The property is entirely fenced off and also has automatic gates, so is good for children.

Sanary is a delightful resort dating from about 1300, typical of Provence with rows of pink and white houses lining the bay. It has enticed visitors over many years, several famous authors having made it their home in the earlier part of the twentieth century. In Sanary itself, there is a good selection of restaurants, several by the port, but many in the old cobbled, pedestrian shopping area where there is also an excellent range of shops offering a wide spectrum of goods and gifts. It is a very active town with a market daily, even a few stalls on Mondays and a weekly Provencal market as well. Antique fairs (brocantes) are held regularly, the theatre offers music and concerts and there are many boat and bus trips.

Local Attractions

Not surprisingly, several are connected with the sea: diving, snorkelling, fishing, sailing, boating and surfing. Diving is a popular pursuit in these clear blue waters, as this is where Jacques Cousteau did his experiments to develop the modern aqualung. Fishing, mainly for swordfish and tuna, is also popular and the days catch is usually on sale on the quay whilst the Six-Fours beach seems to attract a large number of surfers. Of course, there are many places of note to visit in the immediate vicinity. Bandol is the next resort along to the West and the hills to the North are home to the famous Bandol vineyards. Cassis and its amazing calanques (fjord type inlets, some accessible only by boat), St. Tropez, Hyeres and its islands and some very pretty inland villages are all quite close. A little further is the spectacular scenery, still in the Var, of the Gorges du Verdon.

As for the climate, the area is shielded by a natural amphitheatre, and enjoys around 3000 hours of sun exposure each year. East and South-East winds bring it just enough rainfall (650 mm each year) and the Mediterranean Sea moderates too hot seasons.
